Macedonian virtual keyboard

Language overview

Macedonian (македонски, transliterated as makedonski) is an Indo-European language from the Slavic linguistic group, and more precisely from the Eastern South Slavic group. Written in the Cyrillic script, this is the official language of Macedonia. It is also spoken in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Serbia where live ethnic Macedonian minorities. Macedonian is spoken by about 1.4 million people.

Transliteration system: ISO 9

The international standard ISO 9 establishes a system for the transliteration into Latin characters of Cyrillic characters constituting the alphabets of many Slavic and some non-Slavic languages. This system is univocal, as one character is represented by one equivalent character (by the use of diacritics), which represents the original spelling and allows for reverse transliteration (or retroconversion). The first versions of the standard were based on the scholarly system, but the latest version, ISO:1995, emphasizes the unambiguity of the transliteration instead of the phonemic representation.

The ISO 9:1995 standardized system of transliteration replaced the ISO 9:1968 adopted by the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1970. It uses letters with diacritics where other standard romanization systems use digraphs. For instance, the Cyrillic letters Ѕ, Љ and Њ are respectively replaced there with Ẑ, L̂ and N̂ , and not Dz, Lj and Nj.
